(January 13, 2026) Sheriff Carter Weaver, County Administrator Angela Christian, and several members of Georgetown County Council toured the construction site of the new Georgetown County Detention Center on Browns Ferry Road today. Construction is on schedule and within budget, and the facility is expected to open early in 2027.

The new facility replaces the current detention center, which opened in the 1990s. It will offer more space, improved security and updated technology, and is designed to be safer for both staff and inmates. The new jail will be able to accommodate about 250 inmates, compared to the existing jail’s capacity of 212.

“The construction of this new detention center is about safety, accountability, and responsibility to our community,” Sheriff Weaver said. “It will provide a more secure environment for staff and inmates while ensuring we meet modern standards and use taxpayer dollars efficiently.”

The detention center campus will also include separate buildings for a regional law enforcement training center, the Coroner’s Office, 911 Telecommunications, an Emergency Operations Center, and the Sheriff’s Reentry Program, which provides inmates with training and skills to help them transition back into society.
